Science Article "Why I Believe in Flying Saucers", by
MacKinlay Kantor, Pulitzer Prize winning author of "Andersonville".
The noted writer, co-author with Gen. Curtis E. Lemay of "Mission with
LeMay. My Story", tells of the strange personal sighting that convinced
him that UFOs are real. (Copy provided by Ole Jonny Brænne)
1966, Date unknown; 1966; E. of Elista, Kalmuk, Russia 9:50 p.m. Russian coal and gas scientists watched a high-flying silent disc-shaped object spiral through the sky east of Elista, Kalmuk. (Source: Larry Hatch, *U* Database, case #7772, citing Lumieres dans la Nuit, issue #204) Jan. 3, 1966; Los Altos, CA Night. Army colonel expert on rockets and missiles sighted a group of bright light sources speeding overhead at an estimated 1,000-1,200 m.p.h., maneuvering back and forth. Soon afterwards he observed several searchlights sweeping the area as if trying to spot the flying objects. (NICAP report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb. 1966, p. 2.) Jan. 7, 1966; Winslow, England 4:10 a.m. LT. Hearing a high-pitched whine, a police constable turned to investigate and saw a domed disc (rounded on top, flat on bottom) hovering low above a field. A greenish glow was visible around the top. After 5 seconds the UFO flew away rapidly. An independent witness later corroborated the sighting. (Flying Saucer Review, 12(2), March-April 1966, p. 3.) Jan. 7, 1966; 3 miles SW of Georgetown (5 miles NE of Wilmer), AL. (BBU) 3:17 p.m. Civilian had to stop his car when he found object landed on the road blocking his way. Round silver color object 10-12 [25?] ft diameter with 8-10-inch ring or hoop at equator, 5 ft hatch on bottom, [and a cone with a flashing green light?] hovered about 5 ft above ground at 20 ft away, gradually climbed to NE, engine [whirring?] noise increasing, then rapid acceleration to disappearance in a few seconds. Watch stopped [engine had died and now could be restarted?]. [Sulfur or rotten-egg smell noted?] (Hynek UFO Rpt p. 42; Vallée Magonia 721) Jan. 9, 1966; Chascomus, Argentina Cat. 3. Object with blue light beam observed flying away. Flying Saucer Review Histories, Supplement 17. Jan. 11, 1966; Pacific Ocean Large cigar-shaped object passes within one mile of ship. Jan.11, 1966; Wanaque, NJ 6:20 p.m. EST. Police and citizens reported first a brilliant light source, then later a bright egg-shaped object that hovered at low altitude, flew in circular patterns over a reservoir, occasionally making abrupt changes in altitude (vertical maneuvers). Sightings continued for more than an hour. (NICAP notes; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb. 1966, p. 3; New York Journal-American, Jan. 12, 1966). Jan.11, 1966; Myerstown, PA 7:40 p.m. EST. About 140 miles west-southwest of Wanaque, N.J., in the vicinity of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a nurse and others together in a car saw a luminous disc, like one saucer inverted on top of another, at relatively close range as it hovered above the car. After about 5 minutes, the object suddenly accelerated and sped away. (Hynek, 1972, pp. 89-90, 238.) Dr. Carl Sagan requests information from
Blue Book on sightings. The Tridade Island case is referred to and the
Kelley/Hopkinsville case was requested also. Jan. 16,
1966; El Paso, TX10:00 p.m. CST. An American Airlines flight from San Francisco to Houston, Texas, was paced by a bright object just after take-off from El Paso en route to Houston via San Antonio. Two psychologists on board, in a report to NICAP, expressed themselves as dumbfounded by what they saw. A bright light was observed trailing the airliner, moving up and down erratically, speeding ahead, and then reversing course. At one point the pilot, without explanation, turned on the landing lights for a few seconds, banked sharply, and then returned to course. After the plane landed in San Antonio, the witnesses saw the object "shoot up and execute a wide hyperbolic swing into the sky..." (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 11, Jan.-Feb. 1967, pp. 1, 3.) Jan.18, 1966; New Britain, CT 6:00 p.m. A round object rotating slowly in a clockwise direction was observed by a senior metallurgist for about 7 to 10 minutes as it passed overhead at his workplace. It had a string of red lights that blinked on and off. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb 1966, p. 3.) Jan. 19, 1966; Tully, Australia 9:00 a.m. LT. A grower driving a tractor near a swampy area heard a loud hissing sound, and saw a flat, round (disc-shaped, like "two saucers, face to face") blue-gray spinning object about 25 feet in diameter rise to about 60 feet, drop sharply, rise again, then speed out of sight in seconds. A near-circular area of flattened swamp grass or reeds was found at the site (physical traces), measuring about 32 feet by 25 feet. The grass was flattened in clockwise swirls. (Chalker, 1996, pp. 111-114; Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 12, No. 2, Mar.-Apr. 1966, pp. 26-28; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb. 1966, p. 4.) Jan. 20, 1966; Katanning, Australia 112:30 a.m. An object with a row of bright body lights was observed to hover, and to move up and down, while emitting a blinding light and making a sound like bees humming. After a long period of time, the lights brightened and the object suddenly sped away (luminosity/speed correlation). (Flying Saucer Review, May-June 1966, p. 32; Newcastle Morning Herald, Jan. 24, 1966.) Jan. 29, 1966; Rexburg, ID (BBU) February 1966
Dr Brian O'Brien heads a panel of the AF
Scientific Advisory Board that completes a review of Project Blue Book and
recommends that the AF contract with several universities to conduct UFO
studies. (Sparks) Feb. 2, 1966; Salisbury, NC (BBU 10193) Feb. 6, 1966;
Nederland, TX (BBU 10196) Feb. 6, 1966; Madrid, Spain Feb. 11, 1966; Showhegan, ME (BBU) 11:55 p.m. EST. A glowing orange object with domed top hovered, maneuvered over the area, seen by police and citizens. The object was tracked on Air Force and FAA radar "making tight turns at a low altitude." (NICAP report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan. -Feb. 1966, pp. 1-2.) Feb.14, 1966; Witbank, South Africa 7:40 p.m. LT. A farm woman heard a very loud sound and saw a cigar-shaped object descend and hover, the sound level increasing. The UFO had a very bright light at the front, small portholes along the side, and a bluish glow at the trailing end. The object suddenly shot upwards and disappeared. (Flying Saucer Review, 12(4), July-August 1966, pp. 32-33.) Feb. 16, 1966; Brunswick NAS, ME (BBU) 8:30 p.m. A luminous object flashing red, blue, and green lights, landed in the woods. A second object was later seen to join the first one. (Vallée Magonia 726) Feb. 25, 1966; Quipapa, Brazil 10:15 p.m. LT. Two young female factory workers while walking home saw lights in the road, then saw that it was a large disc with two bright lights (body lights) and three small beings about the size of 9-year-old children standing alongside, along with one being over 6 feet tall. The object rose, then landed in a new location. The girls ran home with the object following. It circled the area near their house, then flew away. No sound was heard. One of the girls suffered unspecified "effects" for a period of time. Grass was found depressed (imprints) at the landing spot. (Phillips, 1975. p. 40; from Flying Saucer Review, March 1971 .) Hillsdale, MI 9:00-9:30 p.m. EST. A motorist saw an unidentified aerial object with a dome on top, and a row of red and white flashing lights, that paced his car. The object then changed color to white and sped away (color change-motion correlation). Later (11:30 p.m.), an unidentified aerial object with domed top, flat bottom, and red and white flashing lights, descended abruptly in front of the witness's car, and hovered inches off the road. The driver slammed on the brakes, and the object took off. The object was so large that it overlapped the road. (NICAP report, investigation by John Fuller). March 15, 1966; Youngstown, OH Time not reported. A police officer and other witnesses saw a metallic-appearing circular object with blue lights in apparent portholes along its side. The UFO stopped overhead, trailing two exhaust flames, then shot away to the northwest. (NICAP notes.) March 16, 1966; Eliot, ME 6:30-6:45 p.m. EST. A family saw a bright red ball of light with halo effect at close range for 10-15 minutes. The UFO emitted a high-pitched "beep" every 1 -2 seconds synchronized with a blinking red light. Dogs barked and howled (animal reactions), and ran toward the object, which gradually | disappeared behind trees to the southeast. (New Hampshire NICAP Subcommittee s report.) March 16, 1966; Burnham, ME 7:45 p.m. Two large, moon-sized orange discs flying slowly, then accelerating, body lights blinking on and off. (NICAP notes.) March 17, 1966; Ann Arbor and Milan, MI (BBU) 4:00-7:30 a.m. CST. Police officers saw top-shaped UFOs with green and white body lights. The objects alternately hovered and maneuvered at variable speeds, their luminosity dimming and brightening (pulsating). Two objects operated in unison, circling, looping, and flying in formation. (McDonald memo to U.S. Air Force, July 22, 1966; U.F.O. 3 Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 7, Mar.-Apr. 1966, p. 6; Hall, 2001, pp. 184-86.) March 17, 1966; Grand Rapids, MI Sunset, EST. Three young girls saw a large oval with glowing red light, evenly spaced portholes around the rim from which lights flashed alternately. The UFO moved slowly, then accelerated and sped away. (NICAP notes.) March 19, 1966; Big Rapids, MI 5:20 a.m. CST. Several witnesses saw an elliptical object with a row of rectangular windows, and with a surrounding blue-white haze. Lights on the bottom (body lights) flicked on and off one at a time. A light beam shone into the house. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 46) March 19, 1966; LaPorte, IN Dawn, EST. Police and others saw a round luminous yellow-white object with projections on top. The UFO paced a car, swerving from side to side, its light reflected from the hood of the car. (NICAP notes.) March 19, 1966; Bethesda, MD 9:05 p.m. EST. Col. Howard Wright, retired Air Force pilot, and family saw a bright white light approach from the south, stop and hover, accelerate, zigzag, then continue north, joined by a second light. (NICAP notes.) March 19/20, 1966; Freeport, TX 1:25 a.m. CST. Witnesses saw a bright flash of blue light, then a hovering oval UFO was sighted by crew members of the Coast Guard Cutter "Legare." EM effects were experienced on local electric power systems, house lights blinked off and on rapidly. The UFO was orange and had windows or ports with a hazy appearance in the interior. After a while the object slowly rose about 1,000 feet, emitted a blue glow, then disappeared. Shortly afterwards, two bright lights shot up from the ground and disappeared within seconds. An extensive power failure occurred in Freeport about 2 hours earlier (11:10 p.m.) (NICAP report) March 20, 1966; Miami, FL (BBU 10247) Time not reported. An Air Force reserve member and NASA employee saw a bright light pulsating from white to blue that made an erratic ascent, accelerated and sped away. (Air Force unexplained case, Project Blue Book files, National Archives.) March 20, 1966; Dexter, MI (BBU) 8-8:30 p.m. Frank Mannor and his son, Ronald [plus 40-60 others including 12 policemen ?] saw hovering over a swamp about 1,500 ft away a brown luminous car sized object, with a "scaly" or "waffled" surface, cone-shaped on top, flat on bottom, or football shaped, and 2 bluish-green lights on right and left edges that turned bright red and helped illuminate object in between. Lights blinked out and object reappeared instantly across the swamp 1,500 ft away. The whole object lit up with a yellowish glow at one point and also rose up 500 ft then descended again. After 2-3 minutes of viewing, when 2 flashlights appeared in the distance the object seemed to respond by flying away at high speed directly over the witnesses with a whistling sound like a rifle bullet ricocheting. Object remained in the swamp area for 1/2 hr. [Various other sightings in the area by police shortly afterward.] ( (Hall, 2001, pp. 185-86; Detroit News, Mar. 21, 1966, front page; New York Times, Mar. 22, 1966, Vallée Magonia 731; Todd Lemire; etc.) March 20/21, 1966; Exeter, NH March 21, 1966; Hillsdale,

A train crew watched a UFO pace their train, pull ahead, hover, and climb (maneuver). The Civil Defense director was notified, and also saw the object. Together with other witnesses he watched a "docking" operation as a second UFO linked with the first. (NICAP notes.) March 24, 1966; Holland, MI Time not reported. A car was buzzed by a glowing circular object with red and white body lights at an estimated 150-200 feet altitude. (NICAP notes.) March 24, 1966; Sheboygan, WI (BBU) 10:15 p.m. CST. Two women motorists encountered a bowl-shaped object with two intense white lights plus a green and a red light (body lights) landed on or hovering just above the road. (Vallee, 1969, p. 324.) March 24, 1966; Cook, MN 6:50 p.m. CST. A trapper and guide saw an oval object with glass dome on the front approach angling downward, flashing lights visible around its center, and emitting a loud generator-like humming sound. The object was rotating clockwise around a horizontal axis. It appeared to land in the distance. Next day a large melted oval area about 35 feet by 100 feet and apparent landing gear or skid marks (physical traces) were found in the snow at the landing site. (NICAP report.) March 24, 1966; New Orleans, LA 7:10 p.m. CST. A retired Air Force colonel and a General Electric computer programmer watched a glowing oval object speed across the sky. A round silver object with multi-colored body lights was seen about 200 feet above a house. Witnesses were attracted to it by a "weird" humming sound. Several other North Carolina sightings were reported on the same date. (NICAP notes.) March 25, 1966; Upper Sandusky, OK 1:00 a.m. EST. A top-shaped object with bright body lights visible on its outer edge was seen hovering about 25 feet over woods, point downward, by a farm couple for about an hour. (Associated Press story, few details.) March 26, 1966; Ann Arbor, MI Time not reported. Engineers and technicians watched a glowing red disc maneuver, descend to about 10 feet, and fly parallel with the road for several moments. (U.F.O. March 26, 1966; Texahoma, OK (BBU 10291) March 27, 1966; Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 5:30 a.m. Both Federal Aviation Administration and military control tower operators reported a radar-visual sighting of a maneuvering, oblong, green-white object. (NICAP notes; Columbus Ledger, Ohio, Mar. 28, 1966.) A Georgia investigator reports that on this date at 5:30 am in Muscogee County, a radar-visual sighting was made of an object that appeared to change shape from cigar to wedge to triangle; apparently the same sighting. (Hitt, 1999) March 27, 1966; Lorain, OH 7:10 p.m. EST. A family saw what appeared to , be a double-decked craft with brightly lit windows on the upper surface. The object hovered, dimmed, shot eastward, returned, got brighter again, then sped away to the west. (NICAP notes.) March 28, Niles, MI Early a.m. EST. A truck driver reported that an unidentified aerial object with red, green, and white body lights had paced his truck. When he blinked his headlights, the UFO blinked in apparent response (light reaction), veered away and disappeared. (NICAP notes.) March 28, 1966; Fayetteville, TN (BBU) 8 p.m. Man driving 60 mph suddenly saw a large lighted object 3 ft above the road on a hilltop, which flew off, as the car engine and headlights died. Headlight bulbs later had to be replaced. Object was oval, 25 ft long, dark gray, with about 30 lights along its periphery. (Vallée Magonia 739) March.28, 1966; Wilmington, DE 11:30 p.m. EST. Two witnesses in separate locations independently reported watching a hovering object that was flashing brilliant lights. The object, which made a humming sound, gyrated around erratically. (NICAP notes.) March 29, 1966; Columbus, GA 2:30 a.m. EST. A red oval object was observed moving with an oscillating motion, swinging like a pendulum. The obiect suddenly brightened and made a rapid departure (luminosity/speed correlation). (Hitt, 1999.) March 29, 1966; Hampton area, NH Boxlike object landed in woods. Dog does not react. March 29, 1966; Eliot, ME 7:50 p.m. EST. While driving, a nurse's aide saw a large, bright red elliptical object with dome, five or six portholes emitting bright white light. The object was surrounded by a halo, and hovering near electric power transmission lines. Its body was dull silver and "like crumpled aluminum foil." Dogs were barking (animal reactions) and a pinging sound attracted other witnesses to the UFO. The object descended before finally moving out of sight. (Fowler, 1974, pp. 116, 335, 337; NICAP notes.) March 29, 1966; Hampton, NH 8:00 p.m. EST. About 15 miles south of Eliot, Maine, a motorist saw two oval objects with revolving red body lights. One descended to treetop level and paced the witness's car, then accelerated up and out of sight. (Fowler, 1974, pp. 117, 336.) March 29, 1966; Haverhill-Merrimac, MA 9:15 p.m. EST. About 15-20 miles southwest of Hampton, New Hampshire, several professional people including a deputy sheriff and a teacher saw a pulsating luminous white object moving back and forth. Its color changing from white to red to green to blue, and back to white. The object, circled, hovered, and then sped away leaving a short bluish tail, disappearing in an estimated 3 seconds. (Fowler, 1974, p. 336.) March 29, 1966; Hamilton, Ontario, Canada 9:15 p.m. EST. A teenage boy saw two luminous oval objects about 8 feet in diameter descend and land, making a buzzing sound. The objects had a row of multicolored lights around the rims (body lights) "flickering like a computer." He approached for a closer look, and touched the nearest object, which felt hard and smooth like metal. No heat or cold was felt. The boy then touched an antenna-like projection at the end of one of the objects and received a shock. Frightened, he ran home. His parents confirmed a 3-inch burn mark on his hand and questioned him thoroughly before reporting the incident to authorities. His first-degree burn was treated at a hospital and healed normally. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969b, pp. 4-5; Bondarchuk, pp. 45-46, from the Hamilton Spectator, Apr. 2, 1966.) March 29, 1966; London, Ontario, Canada 11:15 p.m. EST. A bright saucer-shaped (disc) object with central dome and two protuberances (projections) on one side was seen hovering above Westminster Hospital for about 5 minutes. The object then flipped on edge, blue flame was emitted from the protuberances, and it rose into the clouds leaving a comet-like trail. An independent witness confirmed the sighting. In 1966 the Minuteman II ICBM was
deployed to SAC bases: Malmstrom Air Force Base, Ellsworth Air Force Base,
Minot Air Force Base, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, and Whiteman Air
Force Base. Malmstrom Air Force Base was also selected as the location for
an additional Minuteman squadron, and LFs and LCFs were consequently
constructed at this base. The first Minuteman II was deployed at Grand
Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, in August 1965. In early 1966 UFOs
were being reported at these same SAC bases. April ?, 1966; Malmstrom AFB, MT UFOs, alarms, 10 missiles inoperative. (Robert Hastings asked Ray Fowler about this case a few years ago. Fowler had published a reference to it in one of his books, but currently has no records on it and doesn't recall any details) April 1, 1966; 5 miles S of Tangier, OK (BBU) 10:40 p.m. Civilian man, 34, while driving reached a hilltop and saw a green object wider than the road flying N at very high speed, emitting a shrieking noise and a "heat wave." Car engine died. (Vallée Magonia 746) April 1, 1966; Dearborn, MI 12:30 a.m. EST. An elliptical object with domes on top and bottom, and blinking red and green body lights, maneuvered near a car. Static (EM effect) was experienced on the car radio. (NICAP report.) April 1, 1966; Conception Del Uruguay, Argentina Night. A luminous green object surrounded by haze approached a truck, which experienced EM effects as the object neared. The truck slowed and overturned. Committee conducts the first and only public hearing by U.S. Congress ever
held on UFO's. Was a result of the nationwide controversy generated
by AF consultant J. Allen Hynek's "swamp gas" explanation for the
Hillsdale sightings. AF is severely criticized by the Congressmen,
including future President Gerald Ford. The AF is slated to soon test a long-delayed
highly classified sensor system which will obviate the need for collection
of anecdotal UFO reports by an ever more embarrassing Project Blue
Book. The plan for the sensor system and eventual closure of Blue
Book was approved years before, on July 28, 1952, but numerous technical
and budgetary delays kept giving Blue Book reprieves from
termination. Now, the AF command decides that for PR purposes after
the tremendous beating it received in the press, from the public and now
from Congress over its inept UFO explanations that it needs a scientific
fig-leaf to cover its closure of Blue Book. This results in the
contract to University of Colorado in October 1966. A group of people on a picnic saw white, blue, and red lights in a wooded area, and heard a weird buzzing sound. EM effects occurred on their car when a white object followed them as they left the area. (NICAP notes.) April 7, 1966; Lincoln, NE 7:00-8:00 p.m. CST. A group of doctors, lawyers, and pilots saw a constellation of lights, including a large white "beacon" with 4-5 bright red lights, hovering at low altitude (estimated to be about 400 feet) for about 7 minutes during heavy rain. The object(s) suddenly sped away at "fantastic speed." (NICAP report.) April 7, 1966; Mansfield, OH Time not reported. Two sheriffs deputies while on patrol chased a bright round object at high speed, seeing it or a similar object five times. The UFO alternately hovered and sped up, the last time departing vertically upward. (NICAP notes.) [Compare to April 17, 1966, Ravenna, Ohio, sheriffs deputies case.] April 9, 1966; Westport, MA Time not reported. April 22, 1966; Alliance, OH 12:15 a.m. A disc emitting bright white light from a dome on top and with rotating red lights around the rim approached a car within about 40 feet, and hovered. The frightened witnesses fled at high speed, and the UFO apparently followed. The object was finally seen speeding away to the northeast. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 8; report by Walter N. Webb.) April 22, 1966; Long Island, Douglastown, NY Time not reported. A Department of Defense engineering technician saw a disc with a row of windows like mercury vapor lamps. (NICAP report form.) April 22, 1966; Bagley, MN 3:30 p.m. CST. Several witnesses reported seeing an object flying at low altitude and apparently landing. Four small occupants (described as "dwarfs") apparently made repairs and the craft flew away. (Vallee, 1969, pp. 329-30). April 22, 1966; Beverly, MA 9:00 p.m. EST. Police and citizens saw three oval or elliptical objects flashing blue, green, red, and white lights circling low over the local high school. A humming sound was heard. When one of the witnesses raised her hands as if beckoning, one of the objects left the group and approached three witnesses, hovering above them at tree-top height. (Fowler 1974, pp. 130-36, 340; Massachusetts NICAP Subcommittee report; McDonald, 1967, Case 5, reprinted in Vaughan, 1995, pp. 204-205.) April 22, 1966; Beverly, MA (BBU) 9-9:45 p.m. Witnesses including 2 policemen spread over a distance of saw a platter shaped object the size of a large automobile, with 3 red-green-white lights, no sound, hover over Beverly High School then depart to the SW. At one point witnesses saw the object only 20-30 ft over the head of another witness. (Hynek UFO Exp ch. 8, case CEI-5; cf. Condon Rpt Case 6) April 22, 1966; Wenham, MA 9:30 p.m. EST. Several witnesses at a college saw an orange circular object approach to within 600 feet at about 100 feet altitude. The object made a right angle turn and moved out of sight behind trees. (Fowler 1974, p. 340.) [Note: There are two towns named Wenham, one north and one south of Boston.] April 23, 1966; Yorktown, IA 2:10 a.m. CDT. A farm family saw a cigar-shaped object with lights at each end illuminating the ground with red light. The object had two blue lights extending above the left end, a red light at the right end, and an amber glow emanating from its underside. A loud roaring sound was heard as it settled onto the ground. Then they heard loud crackling sounds like gunshots, and their cattle bolted. An odor of ozone was in the air. Later they found imprints in the field where the object had landed, apparently caused by the undercarriage. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 22.) April 23, 1966; Warren, OH Time not reported. A round white object approached and followed a car. (NICAP notes.) April 23, 1966; Randolph, MA 8:40 p.m. EDT. Police and others in a rural lake area sighted an "elongated egg-shaped" (elliptical) object with white lights around its perimeter, colored flashing lights on its underside. (Fowler 1974, p. 340.) April 23/24,1966; Dorchester, MA 10:30 p.m. EST. Members of a family about 13 miles north of Randolph, Mass., saw a disc with dome on top and blinking red lights around the edge, and a brilliant yellow light on top of the dome, bobbing up and down as it moved. The yellow light blinked or flashed alternately with the red lights. The object stopped, hovering over a building. After a while it approached the family's apartment building and maneuvered between it and the adjacent building, emitting a humming sound. It hovered again briefly at the end of the alley, then moved away erratically to the east and disappeared. The same or an identical object was seen again several hours April 24, 1966; Dorchester, MA 5:00 a.m. EDT. The same family as in the previous entry saw an identical oval or discoid object with dome and yellow light on top and red lights around the edge. flashing in the same pattern as the night before. The object emitted a humming sound and "weird, whirring, mechanical noises" as it bobbed around apparently close to the building. An explosive sound was heard, the windows rattled and furniture shook, and the lights went out. The family German shepherd dog whined and scratched at the door (animal reaction). The start of a power failure, which affected about 2,500 homes in the area, was officially timed at 4:57 a.m. It was later attributed to a breakdown in the insulation of the wiring at a point very near the apartment building. Later that evening investigators detected some abnormal radiation on the window sill where the object had been seen. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969b, pp. 45-47; Walter N. Webb investigation report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 8, May-June 1966, pp. 7-8; Fowler 1974, p. 340.) April 24, 1966; Johnson City, TX 3:30 a.m. CDT. An architect and Naval reserve officer camping out with his daughter heard a fluttering sound, then they saw a disc-like object (estimated 20 feet diameter) with a double row of lights or ports around the rim hovering 150-200 feet away at treetop height. It appeared to be rotating, and a blue light pulsated around its rim. The UFO gradually accelerated and moved away to the southwest. (NICAP report form; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 8, May-June 1966, p. 8 ). April 24, 1966; Ashby, MA (BBU) 6:10 p.m. 2 men saw a silent object with a bright blue light on top dive within 100 ft of their car, then suddenly accelerate, and was lost to sight toward Mt. Watatic. (Vallée Magonia 765) April 25, 1966; Towanda, PA 8:52 p.m. EDT. Governor's plane paced by two objects. The crew and passengers of a Convair aircraft carrying Florida Governor Haydon Burns sighted two apparently connected bright yellow or yellow-orange globe-shaped objects that paced the plane for about 40 miles. Witnesses included newsmen and state officials. When Burns ordered his pilot to turn toward the UFO(s), they climbed steeply and disappeared (aircraft avoidance). (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 8, May-June 1966. p. 3.) April 26, 1966; Follansbee, WV (BBU) 11:30 p.m. Young man saw a silent 30 ft object shaped like two bowls glued together, at 100 ft altitude, ahead of his car. He drove away without looking behind. May 6, 1966; Carnestown, FL May 7, 1966; Goodfellow AFB, TX (BBU 10535) May 16, 1966; Temple City, CA About 1:10 p.m. at a school in the area, the principal noticed the children on the playground staring at something in the sky. He looked and saw a dark disc-shaped object with dome on top moving from high overhead toward the east. Several other witnesses made similar reports between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. (Los Angeles NICAP Subcommittee report.) May 17, 1966; New Orleans, LA Day. A Boeing engineer was among the witnesses who saw two discs flying off each wingtip of an airliner. The outer discs lagged briefly during a turn by the airliner. (NICAP report form.) May 17, 1966; Mentor, OH Time not reported. An aircraft design engineer saw a bluish-white object pickup 10 smaller objects in groups, brightening each time a pick-up was made, then dimming (luminosity/motion correlation). The parent object then turned to the west and accelerated away. (NICAP notes.) May 21, 1966; Willow Grove, PA 3:15 p.m. EDT. This one was personally checked by Dr. James E. McDonald, a close-range airborne sighting of a domed-disc, seen under midday conditions by two observers. One of them, William C. Powell, of Radnor, Pa., was a pilot with 18,000 logged flight hours. In a light plane encountered a disc with dome on top at 4,500 feet. The disc was bright red. The object made a sharp, non-banking turn and approached his plane nearly head-on, passing below his starboard wing about 100 yards away, and disappeared behind the plane. (McDonald, 1969, reprinted in Vaughan, 1995, pp. 104-5; Hall 2001, pp. 44-45; Keyhoe and Lore,1969b, p. 6) May 23, 1966; Gainesville, FL. University campus police saw a round glowing object with outer ring of red lights, and a white flashing light in the center, hover above the athletic field, then fly away. (NICAP notes from newspaper story.) May 24, 1966; Temple City, CA 4:15 p.m. PDT. A woman driving in Temple City saw a strange object approach from the southwest, hover and bob around. She stopped and observed the object at relatively close range, at treetop level across a wide highway. "It was the shape of two geranium pots put together with the bands in the center," she said. Although the object was clearly outlined, there was a slight haze surrounding it. The color was bright green. Flashes of sunlight reflected off the surface, giving it a metallic sheen. On the body were what appeared to be a row of louvers and an antenna-like projection. After several minutes the object climbed to the northeast, observed as it moved away by employees of a nearby restaurant who were alerted by the witness. (Los Angeles NICAP Subcommittee report.) June 1, 1966; Lake Ontario, Canada 10:30 p.m. LT. A former RCAF pilot and a friend were cruising on the lake when they saw lights on the water ahead. As they approached within a mile, the lights rose with an audible "swish" and a pulsating humming sound. The two men now could see that it was a disc with dome on top, and it cast an oval reflection on the lake surface. Around the dome was a row of bright yellow lights, and blue-green lights were visible around the lower perimeter (body lights). After hovering briefly, the UFO took off at high speed and quickly disappeared. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 9, Aug.-Sept. 1966, p. 5) June 2, 1966; Massillon, OH Day. A moving luminous cigar-shaped object stopped, then discharged three smaller objects which rose, separated, and flew off in different directions. The parent object then went straight up at terrific speed. (NICAP notes.) June 6, 1966
AF Foreign Technology Division (FTD)
officials decide to leak the AF-manipulated CIA Robertson Panel Report
with Minutes and Comments report (Durant Memo) to visiting Navy scientist
Dr James McDonald, who was working under an ONR (Office of Naval Research)
contract. The AF evidently wanted to make the CIA look bad when the
report was inevitably hushed up by the CIA which complained that AF did
not clear this declassification with the CIA. Fearing that McDonald
was part of an ulterior Navy plot to make the AF look bad, this big show
of AF openness and pretense of trying to overcome excessive CIA
secretiveness would serve to make the AF look good instead. As an
added bonus this sugar-coating of feigned AF openness in trying to release
the Robertson Panel report actually covered a poison pill inside, since
the Robertson Panel report was itself an AF-manipulated, virulently
debunking anti-UFO document which set forth all of the AF's desired
anti-UFO PR positions which had been systematically planted on the CIA and
the Panel back in 1952 and 1953. (Sparks) June 6, 1966; Spooner, Wisc. (BBU 10626) June 8, 1966; Between Kansas and Toledo, Ohio (BBU 10629) June 8, 1966
McDonald blows up at
Hynek. After two days (June 6-7) of examining hundreds of Blue Book
files and discussions with top AF generals, officers and scientists at
FTD, McDonald concluded that the Blue Book effort was incompetent and
scientifically next-to-worthless. McDonald visited Hynek, Dr.
Jacques Vallee and William Powers at Northwestern University, expecting to
join forces to confront the AF over its UFO policies, after McDonald had
been falsely told by Prof. Charles B. Moore on April 28, 1966, that Hynek
supposedly wanted to confront the AF over UFO's. Instead, Hynek was
flabbergasted at McDonald and had no intention or idea of confronting the
AF, which increasingly frustrated McDonald until he blew up at Hynek and
pounded on the table. Vallee commented in his diary that "an entire
era has come to a crashing end. This man [McDonald] has many
contacts, many ideas, and is afraid of nothing." Afterward McDonald
phones Moore and demands to know what was going on and Moore admitted he
"had not been entirely honest" (=lied) about Hynek wanting to confront the
AF, as McDonald later recorded. It was all a setup by Moore,
evidently designed to get the two leading scientist investigators of UFO's
at each other's throats so they would not join forces. Had McDonald
and Hynek formed an alliance it would have threatened to turn official UFO
policy into dust. (Sparks) June 8, 1966; Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada June11, 1966; Westport, MA June 13, 1966; Milan, MI (BBU) Power to missiles lost and regained as UFO passes over Minuteman ICBM complex. (Call to NUFORC) Ted Phillips:
The base commander was flying a B-52 with full crew and all observed a metallic disc in daylight flying very close to them. Two of the crewmen took 35mm photos using up all of their film. He told me of a landing near one of the sites and he dispatched two strike teams and they watched the object with orders to fire on it if anyone got out, there were EM effects - communication between the team and the control tower. I talked (in 1966) to several of the people who guarded the landing site with traces. Several base kids saw the thing come down through the trees behind a housing section on base. After several minutes it ascended leaving behind landing imprints and a lot of tree damage from its descent & ascent. I found and talked with the base photographer who documented the site and traces with a 120 format camera. He told me he turned the negatives and prints over to officers and didn't keep any prints. I located 11 witnesses (including the photographer) who confirmed the event. June 16, 1966; Mt. Sunapee, NH June 16, 1966; Elista, Kalmuk; USSR June 17, 1966; Abington, Berkshire, England 12:30 a.m. 4 Boy Scout campers, including Sterrett, using binoculars saw a red bellshaped object with 3 flashing red lights hover then land 700 ft away, remaining all night, joined by 6 other objects, then rose at dawn. Broken trees and other traces found. (Berliner; cf. Vallée Magonia 776) June 19, 1966; Nha Trang, Vietnam 9:45 p.m. LT. UFO descends on hundreds of witnesses and shuts down vehicles, illuminated terrain. A brilliantly lighted object approached from the north, alternately speeding up and slowing down. The object descended and hovered about 300-500 feet overhead, illuminating the terrain at the Army base. Widespread EM effects occurred on vehicles and machinery for about 4 minutes. Finally, the object shot straight up out of sight, disappearing in seconds. (Fowler, 1981, p. 187; Hall 2001, p. 80.) June 19, Mt. Mitchell, NC 12:05 a.m. EDT. A group of Boy Scouts while camping out, saw three red pulsating lights in a triangular pattern approaching (body lights), then hovering from about midnight to 5:00 am. At sunrise the object lifted up, appearing red and bell-shaped through binoculars, Six smaller objects were hovering nearby on either side of the larger object, changing formations, and then the group disappeared behind a mountain. When the Scouts started to explore in the direction of the objects, about 60 feet from their camp they discovered trees with broken branches and some crushed undergrowth, plus three holes in the ground forming an equilateral triangle (physical traces). An engineer with the Federal Communications Commission saw a maneuvering light that descended with a falling leaf motion (oscillating from side to side). Then he discerned it as three lights in V formation. (New York NICAP Subcommittee report.) Aug. 1, 1966; Prince George's County, MD 12:30 a.m. EDT. Citizens and police in College Park, Lanham, Bowie, Seat Pleasant, and elsewhere around the region saw maneuvering, fast-moving lighted objects. When a police officer approached a hovering object that had pulsating red, green, and white lights, it began a series of maneuvers, descended almost to the ground, then sped away "like a shot." Before it sped away, the object emitted a strange multi-colored light beam that moved rapidly to the ground, also observed by another officer. Andrews AFB denied to a County police dispatcher that they had any unknown objects on radar, but the dispatcher said a control tower operator had acknowledged seeing a fast-moving lighted object, and he later learned that Andrews did have a UFO on its radar but would not admit it officially. The gigantic object blocked out the sunlight and cast a shadow over the plane. Frightened, the pilot put the aircraft into a dive and banked sharply in an effort to elude the object, but it kept pace with him. Just as he was considering firing a .38 caliber pistol at it, the object appeared to change shape to a wedge, then a thin line, and accelerated up and away as if it were "falling up." (U.F.O. (NICAP notes from newspaper story.) Sept. 28, 1966; Wilmington, OH (BBU 10973) 3:38 p.m. Clarke saw 3 round, oval-shaped, aluminum-colored objects with rotating rings around them, 2 remained stationary, while the 3rd varied its altitude. (Berliner) Sept. 30, 1966; New Kingston, PA Disc hovered near Cessna Sept. 30, 1966; Anderson, IN 2:00 a.m. EDT. Police sighted a white ball of light surrounded by a bluish-white pulsating glow (halo effect), sometimes flashing red. The object maneuvered, made a sharp turn and flew southwest beneath an overcast, hovered over trees, rose and descended. (Indiana NICAP Subcommittee report; NICAP report form; police department report). Oct. 5, 1966; Osceola, WS (BBU 10996) Several members of a family saw a small, bright orange, moon-shaped object stationary in the NE for about 20 mins, then suddenly take off very fast to the WNW. Announcement
Formation of the University of Colorado UFO Project, sponsored by the Air
Force Office of Scientific Research, announced.Oct. 10, 1966; Wanaque, NJ 9:15 p.m. EDT. Police officers observed a spherical object with a protrusion on one side emitting an extremely bright, blinding light that lit up the terrain (environmental illumination). The UFO hovered, and moved around erratically at high speeds, making sharp turns and leaving a misty trail in its wake when it moved. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, p. 6; NICAP report, investigation by John Pagano.) Oct. 11, 1966; Davenport, IA 6:15 p.m. CDT. Several persons saw two brightly luminous objects in daylight, one sped below a jet aircraft's contrail moving like a sailed plate (oscillating motion), once stopping abruptly. (NICAP report form.) Oct. 11, 1966; Jonesboro, TN 7:10 p.m. EDT. Several people sighted a cigar-shaped object which, after about 2 minutes, lit up brightly and moved quickly to the north. A short while later two round objects appeared. Each had a "bulge" (dome?) on top and bright light shining from the bottom. The light changed color from white to red to green, as the two objects cavorted around each other. A witness called the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Tri-Cities Airport, which sent an aircraft to investigate. The witnesses saw the plane approach, and as it neared, the objects "went out like a light." (Aircraft avoidance.) Meanwhile, the FAA had asked the witness to keep the phone line open, and said they would send another plane. As the second plane neared, it put on its landing lights, and again, the UFOs blinked out. A third plane re-routed by the FAA was directed to the location of the objects by telephone, and was seen to be closely approaching one of the UFOs, which now appeared egg-shaped. As the plane passed by it, the witnesses saw the object shoot out a light beam toward the plane. At that moment the pilot reported seeing what he thought was a meteor. The NICAP investigator was allowed to listen to the FAA tapes of air-to-ground communications, but none of the pilots reported seeing anything unusual. (Tennessee NICAP Subcommittee report, with investigation by David Kammer; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, p. 5.) Oct. 12, 1966; Jonesboro, TN Noon. Prolonged sighting (more than 5 hours) by many witnesses of numerous discs, fall of so-called "angel's hair," which was sticky and reportedly caused physiological effects on some who touched it (burning sensation, itching, nausea). According to reports, dogs and cows in the neighborhood "acted odd." (Tennessee NICAP Subcommittee report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, pp. 5-6.) [The main features of this sighting strongly resemble ballooning spiders, commonly seen during October in the United States. They and their webs sometimes reflect sunlight. To err on the side of caution, that explanation will be assumed. However, several witnesses experienced burning sensations when they handled the substance, and it evaporated overnight.]
The Inspector General Brief - Number 21, Volume XVIII, 14 Oct. 1966 -
Unidentified Flying Objects (CUFON) Oct.14, 1966; Newton, IL 6:45 p.m. CDT. A yellow-orange disc-shaped object with a blue rim and a row of red lights just under the rim was observed at low level, its glow illuminating the ground. Static interfered with the telephone, and TV interference also was experienced (EM effects) during the sighting. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 45.) Oct. 15, 1966; Split Pond, NJ 4:45 a.m. EDT. A forester starting out to drive home from a camping expedition noticed a reddish glow behind him, and stopped his car to investigate. What he saw, he said, "scared the living hell out of me." A flat-bottom, red-orange disc with a dome on top was hovering above and behind his car. Near panic, he fled the area with the object following him. When the light from the object illuminated the ground all around him. his car engine, dash lights, and headlights all failed (EM effects). When the object receded, his lights and engine functioned normally. This sequence was repeated three times, strongly demonstrating a direct correlation between the light from the UFO and the failure of his car's electrical system. Shortly after the sighting the witness began experiencing a recurring illness (which was the reason for his story appearing in a medical journal); it was characterized by fatigue, anorexia, soreness, muscle weakness, chills, and significant weight loss. After about 6 months he had fully recovered. (Medical Times, October 1968; Hall 2001, p. 37; Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 9.) Oct. 21, 1966; Livermore, CA 4:25 p.m. PDT. Two Sandia Corporation ; engineers saw a sphere which at first appeared translucent, then reflecting light. The object hovered, then ascended very rapidly until out of sight. A deer hunter saw a disc-shaped object rise from a valley about 300 feet away emitting a humming sound. Burn damage to a tent and to a treetop was reported (physical traces). Photographic evidence was submitted. (Phillips, 1975, p. 44; from personal files.) Nov. 30, 1966; New Kingston, PA Time not reported. A private pilot watched a disc with a blinking red light hover alongside his Cessna 150, then shoot straight up and out of sight. (Pittsburgh NICAP Subcommittee report.) Nov. 30, 1966; Taylorsville, IN 5:55 p.m. CST. An elliptical object approached a car, whose engine and headlights were affected. The driver heard a buzzing sound. (CUFOS report, Rodeghier 1981, p. 31.) Dec.1, 1966; Middleboro, MA Dec. 2, 1966; Lake Sarah, MN Dec.13, 1966; Rowley, MA Early a.m. An elliptical object with visible undercarriage (legs), and a red body light was observed. At one point the object emitted a red ball of light. (NICAP notes.) Dec. 18, 1966; E Lake Tiorati, Bear Mtn. State Park, NY (BBU) 4:40 p.m. Witness looked up and saw a silver-brown domed-disc in the W at 45° elevation heading NE, wobbling, noiseless, disappear over and behind a fire tower on a 1,320-ft hill about 1/2 mile away, after taking a photo. (Hynek UFO Rpt pp. 239-245) Dec. 24, 1966; Charleston, WV 7:40 p.m. EST. Two Air Force pilots in a T-33 at 27,000 feet above a solid under cast saw a bright object in clear sky above them, at an estimated 1,000 feet. The object hovered for about 2 minutes, then suddenly rushed away. (NICAP report form, confidential report.) Dec. 25, 1966; Monroe, OR (BBU 11239) 3:30 [?] a.m. PST. A family saw three objects take off from a field and pass over their car with a loud noise and a rush of wind which threw one man against the side of the car and slammed the car door. The noise stopped when the objects were in the air in formation (unspecified). The objects hovered for some time, their color changing to orange-red. (NICAP report, Air Force unexplained case.)
