Created: September 7, 2006, Updated Jan. 8, 2007
This is a 34-page chronology (increased from 11-pages) of UFO incidents and events for 1966, the beginning of the "Mother of All UFO Waves", which lasted throughout 1966 and 1967.
Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Last, but not least, our thanks to Jean Waskiewicz who created the online NICAP DBase (NSID) that helped make it possible to link from the cases to the reports themselves.

Three notable events stand out among the others are two sightings; the Dexter and Hillsdale (MI) sightings of March 20-21 (Frank Manor, etc.) and the Portage County (OH) incident of April 17 (Deputies Spauer and Neff), and the event being the writing of the "Trick would be" memo by Robert Low on Aug. 9th. It is extremely interesting that both 1966 and 1967 include many sightings near missile sites, and in 1966 the US reached a peak of 31,700 of stockpiled nuclear warheads. For more on the 1966-1967 sighting wave, serious researchers should get their copy of this report: "Alien Invasion or Human Fantasy? The 1966-67 UFO Wave" (Richard Hall). For information on missile deployment, see To Defend & Deter. (1)

Jan. 3, 1966; Los Altos, CA
Night. Army colonel expert on rockets and missiles sighted a group of bright light sources speeding overhead at an estimated 1,000-1,200 m.p.h., maneuvering back and forth. Soon afterwards he observed several searchlights sweeping the area as if trying to spot the flying objects. (NICAP report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb. 1966, p. 2.)

Jan. 7, 1966; Winslow, England
4:10 a.m. LT. Hearing a high-pitched whine, a police constable turned to investigate and saw a domed disc (rounded on top, flat on bottom) hovering low above a field. A greenish glow was visible around the top. After 5 seconds the UFO flew away rapidly. An independent witness later corroborated the sighting. (Flying Saucer Review, 12(2), March-April 1966, p. 3.)

Jan. 7, 1966; 3 miles SW of Georgetown (5 miles NE of Wilmer), AL. (BBU)

Jan. 16, 1966; El Paso, TX
10:00 p.m. CST. An American Airlines flight from San Francisco to Houston, Texas, was paced by a bright object just after take-off from El Paso en route to Houston via San Antonio. Two psychologists on board, in a report to NICAP, expressed themselves as dumbfounded by what they saw. A bright light was observed trailing the airliner, moving up and down erratically, speeding ahead, and then reversing course. At one point the pilot, without explanation, turned on the landing lights for a few seconds, banked sharply, and then returned to course. After the plane landed in San Antonio, the witnesses saw the object "shoot up and execute a wide hyperbolic swing into the sky..." (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 11, Jan.-Feb. 1967, pp. 1, 3.)

Jan.18, 1966; New Britain, CT
6:00 p.m. A round object rotating slowly in a clockwise direction was observed by a senior metallurgist for about 7 to 10 minutes as it passed overhead at his workplace. It had a string of red lights that blinked on and off. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb 1966, p. 3.)

Jan. 19, 1966; Tully, Australia
9:00 a.m. LT. A grower driving a tractor near a swampy area heard a loud hissing sound, and saw a flat, round (disc-shaped, like "two saucers, face to face") blue-gray spinning object about 25 feet in diameter rise to about 60 feet, drop sharply, rise again, then speed out of sight in seconds. A near-circular area of flattened swamp grass or reeds was found at the site (physical traces), measuring about 32 feet by 25 feet. The grass was flattened in clockwise swirls. (Chalker, 1996, pp. 111-114; Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 12, No. 2, Mar.-Apr. 1966, pp. 26-28; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 6, Jan.-Feb. 1966, p. 4.)

112:30 a.m. An object with a row of bright body lights was observed to hover, and to move up and down, while emitting a blinding light and making a sound like bees humming. After a long period of time, the lights brightened and the object suddenly sped away (luminosity/speed correlation). (Flying Saucer Review, May-June 1966, p. 32; Newcastle Morning Herald, Jan. 24, 1966.)

Jan. 29, 1966; Rexburg, ID (BBU)

House Armed Services Committee conducts the first and only public hearing by U.S. Congress ever held on UFO's.  Was a result of the nationwide controversy generated by AF consultant J. Allen Hynek's "swamp gas" explanation for the Hillsdale sightings.  AF is severely criticized by the Congressmen, including future President Gerald Ford.

The AF is slated to soon test a long-delayed highly classified sensor system which will obviate the need for collection of anecdotal UFO reports by an ever more embarrassing Project Blue Book.  The plan for the sensor system and eventual closure of Blue Book was approved years before, on July 28, 1952, but numerous technical and budgetary delays kept giving Blue Book reprieves from termination.  Now, the AF command decides that for PR purposes after the tremendous beating it received in the press, from the public and now from Congress over its inept UFO explanations that it needs a scientific fig-leaf to cover its closure of Blue Book.  This results in the contract to University of Colorado in October 1966. April 23/24,1966; Dorchester, MA
10:30 p.m. EST. Members of a family about 13 miles north of Randolph, Mass., saw a disc with dome on top and blinking red lights around the edge, and a brilliant yellow light on top of the dome, bobbing up and down as it moved. The yellow light blinked or flashed alternately with the red lights. The object stopped, hovering over a building. After a while it approached the family's apartment building and maneuvered between it and the adjacent building, emitting a humming sound. It hovered again briefly at the end of the alley, then moved away erratically to the east and disappeared. The same or an identical object was seen again several hours

April 24, 1966; Dorchester, MA
5:00 a.m. EDT. The same family as in the previous entry saw an identical oval or discoid object with dome and yellow light on top and red lights around the edge. flashing in the same pattern as the night before. The object emitted a humming sound and "weird, whirring, mechanical noises" as it bobbed around apparently close to the building. An explosive sound was heard, the windows rattled and furniture shook, and the lights went out. The family German shepherd dog whined and scratched at the door (animal reaction). The start of a power failure, which affected about 2,500 homes in the area, was officially timed at 4:57 a.m. It was later attributed to a breakdown in the insulation of the wiring at a point very near the apartment building. Later that evening investigators detected some abnormal radiation on the window sill where the object had been seen. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969b, pp. 45-47; Walter N. Webb investigation report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 8, May-June 1966, pp. 7-8; Fowler 1974, p. 340.)

Found in the Project Blue Book Archives, this 50-page document was written by Robert L. Chartrand, Specialist in Science and Technology, Science Policy Research Division for the Library of Congress Legislative Reference Service. He was assisted by William F. Brown, Analyst in Science and Technology. This report was written in response to a request from a Member of Congress asking for a summation of what is generally known about UFO's as of April 1966.  The LoC Legislative Reference Service (now the Congressional Research Service) produces these kinds of reports on any subject of interest to Congress, on request. Other than summarizing the AF's anti-UFO propaganda line as of April 1966 it has little significance.

May 21, 1966; Willow Grove, PA
3:15 p.m. EDT. This one was personally checked by Dr. James E. McDonald, a close-range airborne sighting of a domed-disc, seen under midday conditions by two observers. One of them, William C. Powell, of Radnor, Pa., was a pilot with 18,000 logged flight hours. In a light plane encountered a disc with dome on top at 4,500 feet. The disc was bright red. The object made a sharp, non-banking turn and approached his plane nearly head-on, passing below his starboard wing about 100 yards away, and disappeared behind the plane. (McDonald, 1969, reprinted in Vaughan, 1995, pp. 104-5; Hall 2001, pp. 44-45; Keyhoe and Lore,1969b, p. 6)

May 24, 1966; Temple City, CA
4:15 p.m. PDT. A woman driving in Temple City saw a strange object approach from the southwest, hover and bob around. She stopped and observed the object at relatively close range, at treetop level across a wide highway. "It was the shape of two geranium pots put together with the bands in the center," she said. Although the object was clearly outlined, there was a slight haze surrounding it. The color was bright green. Flashes of sunlight reflected off the surface, giving it a metallic sheen. On the body were what appeared to be a row of louvers and an antenna-like projection. After several minutes the object climbed to the northeast, observed as it moved away by employees of a nearby restaurant who were alerted by the witness. (Los Angeles NICAP Subcommittee report.)

June 1, 1966; Lake Ontario, Canada
10:30 p.m. LT. A former RCAF pilot and a friend were cruising on the lake when they saw lights on the water ahead. As they approached within a mile, the lights rose with an audible "swish" and a pulsating humming sound. The two men now could see that it was a disc with dome on top, and it cast an oval reflection on the lake surface. Around the dome was a row of bright yellow lights, and blue-green lights were visible around the lower perimeter (body lights). After hovering briefly, the UFO took off at high speed and quickly disappeared. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 9, Aug.-Sept. 1966, p. 5)

June 6, 1966
AF Foreign Technology Division (FTD) officials decide to leak the AF-manipulated CIA Robertson Panel Report with Minutes and Comments report (Durant Memo) to visiting Navy scientist Dr James McDonald, who was working under an ONR (Office of Naval Research) contract. The AF evidently wanted to make the CIA look bad when the report was inevitably hushed up by the CIA which complained that AF did not clear this declassification with the CIA. Fearing that McDonald was part of an ulterior Navy plot to make the AF look bad, this big show of AF openness and pretense of trying to overcome excessive CIA secretiveness would serve to make the AF look good instead. As an added bonus this sugar-coating of feigned AF openness in trying to release the Robertson Panel report actually covered a poison pill inside, since the Robertson Panel report was itself an AF-manipulated, virulently debunking anti-UFO document which set forth all of the AF's desired anti-UFO PR positions which had been systematically planted on the CIA and the Panel back in 1952 and 1953. McDonald blows up at Hynek.  After two days (June 6-7) of examining hundreds of Blue Book files and discussions with top AF generals, officers and scientists at FTD, McDonald concluded that the Blue Book effort was incompetent and scientifically next-to-worthless.  McDonald visited Hynek, Dr. Jacques Vallee and William Powers at Northwestern University, expecting to join forces to confront the AF over its UFO policies, after McDonald had been falsely told by Prof. Charles B. Moore on April 28, 1966, that Hynek supposedly wanted to confront the AF over UFO's. Instead, Hynek was flabbergasted at McDonald and had no intention or idea of confronting the AF, which increasingly frustrated McDonald until he blew up at Hynek and pounded on the table. Vallee commented in his diary that "an entire era has come to a crashing end.  This man [McDonald] has many contacts, many ideas, and is afraid of nothing."  Afterward McDonald phones Moore and demands to know what was going on and Moore admitted he "had not been entirely honest" (=lied) about Hynek wanting to confront the AF, as McDonald later recorded. It was all a setup by Moore, evidently designed to get the two leading scientist investigators of UFO's at each other's throats so they would not join forces.  Had McDonald and Hynek formed an alliance it would have threatened to turn official UFO policy into dust. Power to missiles lost and regained as UFO passes over Minuteman ICBM complex. (Call to NUFORC)

Ted Phillips:
The base commander was flying a B-52 with full crew and all observed a metallic disc in daylight flying very close to them. Two of the crewmen took 35mm photos using up all of their film. He told me of a landing near one of the sites and he dispatched two strike teams and they watched the object with orders to fire on it if anyone got out, there were EM effects - communication between the team and the control tower. I talked (in 1966) to several of the people who guarded the landing site with traces. Several base kids saw the thing come down through the trees behind a housing section on base. After several minutes it ascended leaving behind landing imprints and a lot of tree damage from its descent & ascent. I found and talked with the base photographer who documented the site and traces with a 120 format camera. He told me he turned the negatives and prints over to officers and didn't keep any prints. I located 11 witnesses (including the photographer) who confirmed the event.

June 16, 1966; Mt. Sunapee, NH

8:50 p.m. LT. Two nuclear scientists reported seeing a very bright yellow object above a cloud bank on the western horizon, moving slowly. The object then accelerated northward and disappeared behind a tall bank of clouds. About 10 minutes later the same or a similar object appeared traveling from north to south, stopped and hovered in the northwest sky for about 30 minutes. The object then diminished in apparent size and was hidden by clouds near the horizon. When viewed through 10 x 60 binoculars, the object had a conical shape and was reflecting sunlight. Its length was computed to be about 60 feet. (Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 12, No. 5, Sept.-Oct. 1966, pp. 27-28.)

9:45 p.m. LT. UFO descends on hundreds of witnesses and shuts down vehicles, illuminated terrain. A brilliantly lighted object approached from the north, alternately speeding up and slowing down. The object descended and hovered about 300-500 feet overhead, illuminating the terrain at the Army base. Widespread EM effects occurred on vehicles and machinery for about 4 minutes. Finally, the object shot straight up out of sight, disappearing in seconds. (Fowler, 1981, p. 187; Hall 2001, p. 80.)

June 19, Mt. Mitchell, NC
12:05 a.m. EDT. A group of Boy Scouts while camping out, saw three red pulsating lights in a triangular pattern approaching (body lights), then hovering from about midnight to 5:00 am. At sunrise the object lifted up, appearing red and bell-shaped through binoculars, Six smaller objects were hovering nearby on either side of the larger object, changing formations, and then the group disappeared behind a mountain. When the Scouts started to explore in the direction of the objects, about 60 feet from their camp they discovered trees with broken branches and some crushed undergrowth, plus three holes in the ground forming an equilateral triangle (physical traces). (Report to Center for UFO Studies.)

June 23, Placitas, NM
3:42 a.m. MDT. Julian Sandoval, a NASA contract flight engineer, also an experienced pilot and navigator, and two independent witnesses saw a glowing elongated object with a blunt end. It had a series of four body lights varying from brilliant green to a bluish tinge, and was hovering at an estimated 12,000 feet. When the object moved, its glow brightened and it appeared to be a powered craft (luminosity/motion correlation). The witness watched the object for an hour and a half, after which it climbed vertically, accelerated to a high velocity and disappeared to the northeast in about 12 seconds. In a report to NICAP, Sandoval estimated the departure speed at "Mach 6 or better." (Christian Science Monitor, July 11, 1966; I/. P.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 9, Aug.-Sept. 1966, p. 3.)

June 27, 1966; Cistella, Spain
4:00 a.m. LT. A farm woman and farm hands saw a large disc-shaped object with bright green, red, yellow and blue body lights descend behind some woods about 500 meters away. A few minutes later two cylindrical objects also with body lights appeared, and the disc reappeared, taking up position between the two cylinders, which closed in on the disc, turned, and all three as a unit shot up at terrific speed and disappeared in less than a second. A column of smoke was then seen rising from behind the woods that spread and enveloped one of the men as the woman and the other man took shelter in their car. The three then went to the clearing beyond the woods to investigate and found a freshly broken tree branch and scorched potato plants (physical traces). The man who had been enveloped by the smoke cloud later experienced extraordinary sleepiness. (Investigated by Antonio Ribera. Flying Saucer Review Vol. 12, No. 6, Nov-Dec. 1966, pp. 3-4.)

When a police officer approached a hovering object that had pulsating red, green, and white lights, it began a series of maneuvers, descended almost to the ground, then sped away "like a shot." Before it sped away, the object emitted a strange multi-colored light beam that moved rapidly to the ground, also observed by another officer. Andrews AFB denied to a County police dispatcher that they had any unknown objects on radar, but the dispatcher said a control tower operator had acknowledged seeing a fast-moving lighted object, and he later learned that Andrews did have a UFO on its radar but would not admit it officially. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 9, Aug. -Sept. 1966, p. 4.)

2:00 a.m. LT. A couple saw an intensely bright glowing disc approach and hover about 1 50 yards from their house above an old tree. After a short time two smaller brightly luminous discs emerged from the larger object and took up positions alongside. They them emitted two bright white conical light beams that illuminated the ground and surrounding terrain so brilliantly that the man was able to read the time on his watch (2:10 am). Next the two smaller discs extinguished their lights and re-entered the parent-object, which tilted slightly and moved slowly towards the house. A humming and/or jet-like sound could be heard as the object passed over the house, now appearing pear-shaped. Revolving colored lights were visible on the underside. Next morning the man had a rash resembling sunburn on his face, and he and his wife both had headaches and sore necks. Some apparent damage to foliage, circular holes in the ground, and a large depression with flattened grass were found beneath the area where the object had hovered. 10:00 a.m. EDT. A private pilot flying at about 9,500 feet observed a huge cone-shaped object that descended above his plane making a "screeching" or singing noise that he compared to the sound tires make on a wet pavement. The gigantic object blocked out the sunlight and cast a shadow over the plane. Frightened, the pilot put the aircraft into a dive and banked sharply in an effort to elude the object, but it kept pace with him. Just as he was considering firing a .38 caliber pistol at it, the object appeared to change shape to a wedge, then a thin line, and accelerated up and away as if it were "falling up." (U.F.O. Cone paces plane Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, p. 4 ; Hall  2001, pp. 128-29; Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 7; NICAP report form.)

October 7, 1966 - Announcement
Formation of the University of Colorado UFO Project, sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, announced.

Oct. 10, 1966; Wanaque, NJ
9:15 p.m. EDT. Police officers observed a spherical object with a protrusion on one side emitting an extremely bright, blinding light that lit up the terrain (environmental illumination). The UFO hovered, and moved around erratically at high speeds, making sharp turns and leaving a misty trail in its wake when it moved. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, p. 6; NICAP report, investigation by John Pagano.)

Oct. 11, 1966; Davenport, IA

Oct. 11, 1966; Jonesboro, TN
7:10 p.m. EDT. Several people sighted a cigar-shaped object which, after about 2 minutes, lit up brightly and moved quickly to the north. A short while later two round objects appeared. Each had a "bulge" (dome?) on top and bright light shining from the bottom. The light changed color from white to red to green, as the two objects cavorted around each other. A witness called the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Tri-Cities Airport, which sent an aircraft to investigate. The witnesses saw the plane approach, and as it neared, the objects "went out like a light." (Aircraft avoidance.) Meanwhile, the FAA had asked the witness to keep the phone line open, and said they would send another plane. As the second plane neared, it put on its landing lights, and again, the UFOs blinked out. A third plane re-routed by the FAA was directed to the location of the objects by telephone, and was seen to be closely approaching one of the UFOs, which now appeared egg-shaped. As the plane passed by it, the witnesses saw the object shoot out a light beam toward the plane. At that moment the pilot reported seeing what he thought was a meteor. The NICAP investigator was allowed to listen to the FAA tapes of air-to-ground communications, but none of the pilots reported seeing anything unusual. (Tennessee NICAP Subcommittee report, with investigation by David Kammer; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, p. 5.)

Oct. 12, 1966; Jonesboro, TN
Noon.  Prolonged sighting (more than 5 hours) by many witnesses of numerous discs, fall of so-called "angel's hair," which was sticky and reportedly caused physiological effects on some who touched it (burning sensation, itching, nausea). According to reports, dogs and cows in the neighborhood "acted odd." (Tennessee NICAP Subcommittee report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 10, Oct.-Nov. 1966, pp. 5-6.) [The main features of this sighting strongly resemble ballooning spiders, commonly seen during October in the United States. They and their webs sometimes reflect sunlight. To err on the side of caution, that explanation will be assumed. However, several witnesses experienced burning sensations when they handled the substance, and it evaporated overnight.]

Oct. 15, 1966; Split Pond, NJ
4:45 a.m. EDT. A forester starting out to drive home from a camping expedition noticed a reddish glow behind him, and stopped his car to investigate. What he saw, he said, "scared the living hell out of me." A flat-bottom, red-orange disc with a dome on top was hovering above and behind his car. Near panic, he fled the area with the object following him. When the light from the object illuminated the ground all around him. his car engine, dash lights, and headlights all failed (EM effects). When the object receded, his lights and engine functioned normally. This sequence was repeated three times, strongly demonstrating a direct correlation between the light from the UFO and the failure of his car's electrical system. Shortly after the sighting the witness began experiencing a  recurring illness (which was the reason for his story appearing in a medical journal); it was characterized by fatigue,  anorexia,  soreness,  muscle weakness,  chills,  and significant weight loss. After about 6 months he had fully recovered. (Medical Times, October 1968; Hall 2001, p. 37; Keyhoe & Lore, 1969a, p. 9.)

3:00 a.m. LT. A Canadian Pacific DC-8 airliner traveling on a northwest course at 35,000 feet observed a pair of pulsating, luminous objects hovering to their left. The objects descended at a slight angle and took up position off their left wing, pacing the plane for 1-2 minutes. Some members of the crew thought there was a connecting structure between the two lights. The lights were separated by about 3-4 degrees. A V-shaped pair of thin light beams emanated from the objects, first pointing upward, then downward. Finally, the objects accelerated, pulled away, and climbed out over the Pacific Ocean to the west, disappearing in the distance. Dec. 30, 1966; Haynesville, LA (BBU)
8:15 p.m. Physics professor Dr. Galloway driving through a wooded area saw a bright, pulsating glow, changing from orange to white, in the woods about 1 mile away, estimated visible light power output at about 1 megawatt. Coming back the next day, he located traces of burns, and called the USAF and University of Colorado UFO project. (Vallée Magonia 808; Condon Rpt pp. 277-280; Richard Hall NICAP letter Mar. 3, 1967)
